Why LED is worth the change
LED lamps draw a fraction of the power of the halogen and incandescent lamps they replace and last many times longer, so the saving comes from both a lower running cost and far fewer replacements. Two things matter as much as the wattage, and cheap fittings get both wrong. Colour temperature sets the mood: around 2700K for living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K where you need to see clearly. Colour rendering, the CRI figure, decides whether your kitchen worktop and your clothes look the colour they actually are. We specify fittings that get both right.
Getting dimming right
Most complaints about LED lighting are really complaints about mismatched dimming. Flicker, buzz, a narrow usable range and lamps that will not switch off are all symptoms of a leading edge dimmer left over from the halogen era driving LED loads it was never designed for. We fit trailing edge dimmers matched to the driver and the load, which is the difference between lighting that feels expensive and lighting that feels irritating.
Outdoor, security and commercial lighting
Outside, the fitting has to survive the weather and the circuit has to be protected properly. We install garden and driveway lighting, PIR security floodlights, and supplies to garages and outbuildings, on correctly rated circuits with an appropriate IP rating for the exposure. For commercial customers we handle shop and office relighting, workshop and warehouse lighting, and emergency lighting installation and testing.
Regulations and certification
Swapping a like for like fitting on an existing point is straightforward. New lighting circuits, new lighting points and any work inside a bathroom are notifiable in England and Wales under Approved Document P of the Building Regulations, so they must be carried out or certified by a registered electrician. Bathroom lighting in particular has to respect the zones set out in BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, and getting an IP rating wrong there is a genuine safety issue rather than a technicality.
