Why upgrade an old fuse box?

BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations now requires residual current protection on essentially all domestic final circuits.
The practical benefits are easy to state:
- Shock protection. An RCD or RCBO trips fast enough to prevent a fatal shock in most fault conditions.
- Fault containment. With RCBOs, a faulty kettle takes out the kitchen sockets, not the whole house.
- Fire risk reduced. Metal enclosures contain a fault that would once have set light to a plastic board.
- Headroom. A modern board leaves spare ways for an EV charger, a shower or a garden supply.
- Compliance. Landlords need an installation that passes an EICR, and an unprotected board is a common reason for failure.
Is a board change legally required?
No law forces you to replace a fuse box simply because it is old. What the law and the regulations require is that the installation is safe and, for rented property, that it is inspected at least every five years. In practice, most consumer unit upgrades in Stafford are triggered by one of three things: an EICR returning a C1 or C2 code, new work that the existing board cannot protect, or an insurer or buyer asking questions.

What to expect on the day
